Tonight’s (Sat. July 28, 2018) UFC Calgary card certainly lived up to the hype.
In the main event, former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez was defeated by rising 155-pound challenger Dustin Poirier. The co-main event featured a 145-pound match-up between two of the division’s best, as Jose Aldo scored a first round knockout over Jeremy Stephens. Plus, former strawweight queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk got back in the win column against Tecia Torres.

Main Card:
- Lightweight: Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier
Round 1:
Alvarez presses forward early but Poirier is able to back him up and slow the pace a bit. A few nice body shots from Alvarez and a leg kick. A stiff body kick lands for Alvarez and Poirier misses on a high kick. A leg kick from Poirier takes Alvarez’s leg out from under him for a moment. Poirier is trying to find his range but Alvarez keeps tagging him a bit each time he comes inside.
A left hand lands for Poirier. Alvarez has a takedown stuffed and continues to throw leg kicks. Alvarez continues to work the body of Poirier. A nice combination from Poirier and it forces Alvarez to pick up the pace to end the round. Poirier lands a few counter strikes to end the round.
Round 2:
Right out the gate Alvarez has a takedown attempt stuffed. A spinning back-fist lands for “The Underground King.” More body shots from Alvarez and a caught kick from Alvarez gets the fight to the ground for a few seconds before he shoots back up. Alvarez goes for a takedown against the cage and Poirier pulls guard and sinks in a guillotine. Alvarez is able to squeak out of it after a few seconds and the pair are standing in the clinch against the cage.
Again Alvarez goes for a takedown and Poirier pulls guard for a guillotine attempt again but Alvarez gets out of this one faster. Now Alvarez takes Poirier’s back agains the cage and is going for a rear-naked choke but is getting more of a crank as he isn’t under the neck. After a scramble Alvarez gets full mount while Poirier is sat up against the cage. Alvarez throws a 12-6 elbow. Uh oh. A warning from the referee and they’re standing again. A big flurry from Poirier and Alvarez is in trouble. Poirier is absolutely swarming Alvarez and finally stops him after the referee steps in after Alvarez drops.
