Conor McGregor feels UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman needs to be more original with his content.
Who can forget the UFC “GO BIG” press conference from 2015?” As is the case with all the classic Conor McGregor press conferences, there was at least one McGregorism spawned that day. Prior to facing his scheduled opponent at the time, Jose Aldo, in a featherweight title unification bout, McGregor wanted everyone on stage to acknowledge that they would all feel honored to someday share the Octagon with him. Why? Because there would be a “red panty night” celebration to come from it.
Similar to the “Who the fook is that guy” McGregorism launched the following year, the “red panty night” expression has since taken on a life of its own. It’s no longer limited to just Conor McGregor. References and modifications to the phrase are uttered often by fighters and the general public.
In an ESPN interview released yesterday, Kamaru Usman gave the “red panty night” line his own spin ahead of his UFC 261 fight against Jorge Masvidal.
“It’s green panty night when you fight me,” Usman declared. “He’s not getting the pay per views and stuff like that on his own. He has to fight me. And so, yeah, is he the biggest name right now in the division out of all these guys? Absolutely. But he’s the first one that I’m lapping right now in the division.”
When McGregor encountered Usman’s quote in a headline earlier today, he took issue with Usman’s creative infringement.
“Am I tripping or is this jackass always at this? Everything I say.”
Following Conor McGregor’s welterweight victory over Donald Cerrone at UFC 246, McGregor teased making a run in the welterweight division. Kamaru Usman responded by welcoming McGregor to challenge him for the welterweight championship whenever he wanted the opportunity.
Usman would then find it amusing when McGregor met his invitation with radio silence while instead expressing interest in fights against Anderson Silva and Diego Sanchez. A year later, the welterweight champion is finally receiving a response from McGregor but not the one he welcomed. Instead of calling Usman out for a fight, McGregor is calling him out for what the Irishman perceives to be his total lack of originality.
