Many view Alistair Overeem as one of the elite MMA heavyweights of all-time.
A win at UFC 203 Saturday night over Stipe Miocic would give Overeem the UFC heavyweight title and likely make that a fact.
Overeem is a former Strikeforce and Dream champion, having gone 41-14 over his MMA career. That includes four straight wins over Andrei Arlovski, Junior dos Santos, Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve.
“We’re here for one goal and one goal only,” Overeem said recently during open workouts (thanks to MMAjunkie for the quotes). ” We’re going to cement my legacy. We are going to get that championship belt.
“It will be history.”
The 36-year-old holds wins over six former UFC champions, including Brock Lesnar, Fabricio Werdum and Vitor Belfort. Of his 41 pro victories, 19 have been via submission and 18 by strikes, including his last two over Arlovski and dos Santos.
“It definitely does feel special,” Overeem said. “There’s definitely that extra tingling of nerves. Sometimes you don’t have nerves, sometimes you have a little bit of nerves. This is a little bit of nerves.
“But this is going to be my 87th fight. We’ve been there, we’ve done that. I use that tension. I’m using those nerves to my advantage. We’ll come out on top on Saturday.”
