“Cowboy” To Lightweight: Dana White Says Not So Fast

If Dana White has his way, Donald Cerrone will remain a top contender in the welterweight division and not compete for UFC lightweight gold again.

Following his third consecutive victory at 170 pounds Saturday night at UFC 202 over Rick Story, “Cowboy” again made it known that he wishes to challenge UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in New York City at UFC 205 this November.

In the Octagon debut for Alvarez two years ago, it was Cerrone scoring a decision.

White, though, told the post-fight show on FOX Sports 1 that he is too impressed with Cerrone at welterweight and hopes he stays there.

“I don’t like (lightweight); he looked amazing at (welterweight),” White said. “He’s on a roll. Cowboy looks good at 170 and I’d like to see him stay there. I could (see him getting a title shot).”

Cerrone fought for UFC lightweight gold last December, losing to then-champion Rafael dos Anjos. That prompted his move to 170 pounds, where he has bested Story and Patrick Cote in consecutive fights.
