UFC president Dana White believes there is a match to be made in the light heavyweight division that does not involve champion Daniel Cormier.
Appearing on a recent edition of “UFC Unfiltered,” White said he would like to pair Jon Jones with Anthony Johnson.
Of course, that is contingent on Jones being cleared to compete by the Nevada Athletic Commission and USADA following his pre-fight failed drug test ahead of UFC 200.
“I haven’t talked to Jon, but the guy’s got 13 lives,” White said (thanks to MMAjunkie for transcribing). “It’s looking good for him. I think he’s got to deal with (the) Nevada (State Athletic Commission) right now and this thing that went down. I can’t say a lot about it because it’s not my place. We’ll see how this thing plays out, but it’s looking good for him.”
Johnson earned a 13-second win over Glover Teixeira at UFC 202 this past weekend, cementing his status as the No. 1 contender. However. “Rumble” and Jones have been on a collision course for sometime now that just seems to never line up.
“I’m in a weird place,” White said on the show. “We saw that fight, and it was a great fight. I’ve still got to talk to (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva and see what he thinks. But I’m thinking maybe we do Anthony Johnson vs. Jon Jones to see who gets to fight Daniel Cormier.”
