Floyd Mayweather Responds to Reports of Bout Agreement With Conor McGregor

It looks like Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor couldn’t come to terms on a bout agreement after all.

Last night (Feb. 13) a report surfaced claiming Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight title holder McGregor and boxing icon Mayweather had come to financial terms for a boxing contest.

The report had the world of sports buzzing. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith claimed Mayweather told him that while nothing was signed, he was “very, very close” to signing a bout agreement to fight “Notorious.”

Even the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) chairman Anthony Marnell said there have been “real discussions” with “the real players” involved to make McGregor vs. Mayweather a reality.

“Money” broke his silence on the speculation and reports surrounding his fighting future. Mayweather took to Twitter to release the following statement:

“Although there has been several rumors circulating through (the) media suggesting that I will have an upcoming fight, I’d like to set that record straight and state that there (have) been no deals made on my behalf in regards to a bout with any fighter at this time. I am happily retired and enjoying my life! Rest assured that if any changes come about, I will be the first to let the world know!”

The world is waiting in anticipation to see what McGregor’s next move will be. An interim UFC lightweight championship bout between No. 1 ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov and No. 2 ranked Tony Ferguson will take place on March 4 at UFC 209. That event is going to be held inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

As far as Mayweather goes, he was last seen in action against Andre Berto. He easily won the contest by unanimous decision. While that fight was built up as Mayweather’s “retirement fight,” many aren’t convinced that “Money” would end his career on a bout that did subpar pay-per-view (PPV) numbers.
