Alexander Shlemenko will go down in history, although it’s a record that the former Bellator Middleweight Champion probably hopes he won’t be remembered for in the history books.
Shelemenko tested positive for anabolic steroids for his second-round knockout victory over MMA veteran Melvin Manhoef at the Bellator 133 event back on February 13, 2015 in Fresno, California.
Due to the no-tolerance anti-drug policy implemented and shared by many of the top athletic commissions in the country, and in many foreign countries, Shlemenko, a first-time offender, was handed down a three-year suspension and a $10,000 fine by the California Athletic Commission (CAC).
Testing on Shlemenko’s urine sample, which was screened at UCLA, showed that he had a 50:1 testostone/epitestosterone ratio. Anything over 4:1 is illegal for a professional MMA fighter or professional boxer in the state of California. The steroid oxandrolone and oxandrolone metabolites also showed up in Shlemenko’s system. A second test on the sample confirmed the original results.
Previous punishments for a first-time offender would normally result in nine-month-to-a-year suspension.
