UK cash heist suspect appears in Morocco court
By Zakia Abdennebi
RABAT (Reuters) – A champion kick boxer suspected of taking part in Britain's biggest cash robbery was charged in a Moroccan court on Wednesday with offences including beating police officers and drug possession.
Briton Lee Murray, who arrived in Morocco shortly after the 53 million pound armed hold-up of a Securitas cash depot in Kent, was arrested by Moroccan security forces with three British men in June.
British police have charged several others in connection with the February 2006 heist and prosecutors are seeking the extradition of Murray, who the media say competed as a cage fighter and appeared on television as Lee “Lightning” Murray.
Murray and the three men, who have been in jail since their arrest in the wealthy Rabat suburb of Souissi, arrived at the court house in Sale near the capital looking pale and drawn.
The judge told Murray, sho is of Moroccan origin, that he was charged with “committing violent crime and beating and humiliating members of the security forces”.
It was not clear from the information given in court when the alleged crimes took place.
Local officials said police had discovered small amounts of cocaine when they raided the Souissi villa where Murray was living with the men who acted as his bodyguards.
The trial was postponed until February 21 after defence lawyers asked for more time to prepare their case.
Extradition proceedings against Murray could be slowed down if he is found guilty and serves time in a Moroccan jail.
