Liz Carmouche previously made history when she fought Ronda Rousey in the first-ever female championship fight inside the Octagon.
This past Saturday night at UFC 205, Carmouche again made history, earning the first win for a fighter in Madison Square Garden in the UFC when she bested Katlyn Chookagian via decision.
While she’ll never forget the fight with Rousey back at UFC 157, this one was memorable for other reasons.
“But walking out to Madison Square Garden, and the history that’s here with boxing and all the musicals they’ve ever had, my family being from New York City, there’s also no comparison for that,” she said (thanks to MMAjunkie for the quotes) “You really can’t compare the two.
“The atmosphere at UFC 157 – even to this day and experiencing this fight, I haven’t felt a crowd’s energy like that. Throughout every moment of that fight, you could feel the uproar and the disappointment, and the back and-forth, and I’ve never felt that before.”
Carmouche was fighting for the first time in 19 months in New York City. She is now 11-5 overall and an even 3-3 inside the Octagon. Her three defeats have come at the hands of Rousey, former champion Miesha Tate and fellow former title contender Alexis Davis.
