Episode 11 – Lutter vs. Sell
Air date: 10/26/2006

The show starts off with the fighters’ recap of the Shonie Carter / Matt Serra fight. Even though he lost, all of the fighters were impressed with Shonie’s performance and they couldn’t believe that Matt got caught with another spinning back fist. Dana then sets the stage for the welterweight final, which will be Chris Lytle against Matt Serra. Now it’s time for the middleweights to fight and the first match is going to be Travis Lutter vs. Pete Sell. Back at the Ultimate Fighter House, Pete Spratt pounds the living room wall looking for a soft spot to perform his “run through the wall” stunt with football pads and a helmet. When Mikey Burnett hears about the stunt he decides that he’s going to try running through the wall first without the football pads. Armed with only a pair of swimming goggles and a mouthpiece, Mikey attempts to run through the living room wall not once, but four times. Mikey puts the hurt on both the wall and himself, and the rest of the fighters enjoy the entertainment. Later on that night, the fighters gather in the living room to watch The Ultimate Fighter Season 3 Finale. The fighters who are presently semi-finalists talk about how it’s an inspiration to watch the finals and to see what it is that they’re fighting for. The next morning everyone surveys the damaged wall from Mikey’s jackass stunt. Mikey shows off his battle scars. He talks about how he could’ve done better had he been able to get his speed up. At the Ultimate Training Center, Pete Sell and Travis Lutter show up for the official weigh in for their middleweight semi-final fight. Randy Couture talks about how Pete will probably try to keep this fight standing because he’s the type of fighter that likes to bang. Dana then talks about how he thinks Pete made a big mistake asking to fight Lutter in the semi-finals and giving the easier match-up to Patrick Cote. Randy then talks about Travis’ skill as a Jiu-Jitsu fighter and Dana makes the prediction that Travis will win this fight.

At the Team Mojo Training Session, Pete Sell works with Chuck Liddell trying to add some last minute fighting techniques to his game. Pete initially thought that Chuck wasn’t going to be much help, but after a few sessions with him he thinks Chuck is an awesome trainer and he has learned a lot from him. Chuck talks about how he likes helping young fighters out and enhancing their overall fight game. Back at the Ultimate Fighter House, Gideon Ray confronts Charles McCarthy for drinking all of his soymilk and Charles apologizes. Shonie then grabs a deck of cards and shows off his card throwing skills. Some of the other fighters respond by throwing cards back at Shonie and then before you know it, an all out war begins. The fighters start throwing poker chips, food, paper plates, and anything else they can get their hands on at each other.

The next morning, the aftermath of the food fight is still left all over the living room. Travis Lutter is the first to get up and decides to go out for a morning jog. Din Thomas comments on the fact that he feels bad for Travis because none of his teammates are helping him train for his semi-final fight. Din feels that Team No Love has let Travis down during a crucial time especially since Travis helped everyone on his team get ready for their fights. At the Ultimate Training Center, Travis is alone and works out by himself. He talks about how it sucks to be the only member of the blue team to be in the semi-finals and how nobody on his team is working out with him anymore. Mark DellaGrotte works with Travis in the Octagon and talks about how Travis is the most focused fighter in this competition and it’s that focus which is going to help him do well in this fight. Travis talks about how lucky he is to have Mark to work with him. Mark then talks about how they have a good coach/fighter respect for each other. Mark also says that he thinks that the Pete Sell/Travis Lutter fight is going to be the showstopper of the season. The next day is Fight Day. Travis enters the Ultimate Training Center saying that he’s looking forward to his fight with Pete Sell and he’s confident that he’s going to be the better fighter. As Pete gets taped up for his fight, he comments that Travis is the toughest fighter here and for him the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. Travis then says that this fight is going to the ground and he’s going to do his thing on Pete. Pete says that there’s no way Travis is going to just take him down and submit him. Pete says that he plans on taking Travis’ head off. Travis enters the Octagon and says that he’s the guy who cares the least in the house and from his perspective the guy who cares the least wins. Pete enters the Octagon saying that he’s ready for a war, so lets do it.

Round one of the Middleweight Semi-final fight begins. Both fighters throwing some air jabs to feel each other out. Travis then goes to the clinch and backs Pete up against the cage and eventually takes him down. Travis quickly transitions to a side mount and tries to soften Pete up with a few punches to the ribcage. Pete stays calm while on bottom, but can’t get out from Travis’ mounted position. Travis tries to work an arm bar, but Pete slides out of it. For the remainder of the round Travis dominates Pete from the side guard position, but does little or no damage to Pete.

Round two begins. Pete starts off strong and lands a couple of shots on Travis. Travis responds by chasing Pete into the cage and going for the clench. Travis then takes Pete down and hits Pete with a few elbows and punches to the face. Still on bottom Pete transitions to a butterfly guard, which prevents Travis from landing any significant blows. Travis then passes Pete’s guard and proceeds to land a couple elbows on Pete’s head. When Pete tries to guard himself from the blows, Travis grabs his arm and attempts another arm bar. Pete defends it well and escapes quickly, but still remains on bottom for the rest of the round.

At the beginning of round three, Travis immediately goes for the takedown pushing Pete into the cage and onto the ground. For the first minute of the round, Travis continues his game plan of staying on top of Pete and waiting for a chance at a submission. Pete struggles to get out of Travis’ clutch, but isn’t successful. Big John McCarthy finally stands the fighters up and Travis again goes for the takedown and almost gets caught in a guillotine choke. Travis moves to a side mount and lands some more elbows. For the rest of the round, Travis continues to ground and pound Pete until the final bell. In the fight recap, Pete talks about how he was looking for a knockout right from the beginning. Travis says that all he wanted to do is take him down and work him from the ground. Dana says that Travis was landing elbows and punches at will and Pete couldn’t do anything about it. Randy then offers his thoughts, saying that Travis dominated the fight and rode Pete like a cheap suit. Travis wins the fight by unanimous decision. Pete offers a tearful post fight interview talking about how it sucks to lose, but that everyone in the fight game loses. Matt Serra tries to lift his spirits by telling Pete that he showed amazing heart in that fight. Pete says that he used to make fun of fighters who cried after a fight, but after putting so much of himself into this competition he now understands why fighters get emotional after a big loss. In the winner’s dressing room Travis talks about being in the finals is a great moment in his career.
