The Enigma That Is Jon Jones (Editorial)

I’m not going to pretend to have some “inside sources” close to Jon Jones.

I do, though, have a different perspective of “Bones.”

Back when he was fresh out of high school, Jones enrolled at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. That just so happens to be my hometown.

As a sports writer with the local newspaper, I have gained plenty of close contacts to the school and the wrestling program, along with many of the “higher-ups” within the college.

To say not a single one of them were shocked the first time Jones’ name ended up in the headlines for something wrong would be an understatement.

“Egomaniac.”

“Untrustable.”

“Out of control.”

“Two-faced.”

Those are just some of the common words that would come up in discussions with workers at Iowa Central when talking about the time Jones spent competing for the Tritons.

It’s obvious that Jones has troubles and the idea of piling on is pointless at this point. But, this isn’t the first, second or even third time he’s had trouble with “the law.”

But it is time he makes some radical changes.

A whole new support system needs to be brought in, starting from the top.

Get out of New Mexico, go back home, live with one of your NFL brothers; do something different.

Management needs to go. Get someone who can focus in on you and only you instead of working from a distance and managing several other fighters.

The talent of Jon Jones is out of this world.

Unfortunately, so isn’t the idea that he holds himself as invincible.
