The following is a TUF 5 report for episode six, courtesy of the official TUF 5 website – TheUltimateFighter.tv:
First up on this week’s episode is a battle between Team Penn’s Joe Lauzon and Team Pulver’s Brian Geraghty. UFC fans will of course remember Lauzon for his stunning first round stoppage of Pulver last year at UFC 63. Geraghty wants to get a little payback for his coach, but Pulver tells him, “Forget that he hit me. Forget that we fought.”
Once the bell rings though, Geraghty didn’t even have a chance to get his gameplan going as Lauzon slammed him to the canvas and started to unleash forearms with bad intentions. One appeared to knock Geraghty out for a second, but before the finisher could be released, Geraghty moved out of the way and made it back to his feet. Lauzon was not to be denied though, and after jumping on his opponent’s back, he sunk in a rear naked choke that produced a tap out and Team Penn’s first win of the season.
“I’ve never been embarrassed like that before in my life,” said Geraghty.
The next fight on the episode six docket promised to be just as explosive, as returning Team Penn member Rob Emerson squared off against 6 foot 4 Corey Hill, who confessed to his coach that he wasn’t 4-0 in professional mixed martial arts, but 2-0 in amateur action. Then it was revealed that he hadn’t even fought before and that his bout against Emerson was going to be his first.
These revelations set the stage for what was going to be a very interesting bout, but unfortunately, there were few fireworks in what turned out to be a close, tactical fight. The first round belonged to Hill as Emerson had problems getting inside on his lanky foe and dealing with his substantial reach advantage. In the second, the veteran got closer though and was able to potshot Hill and get out of range effectively, and he even locked in a heel hook late in the round when the action hit the mat, earning him the round and forcing the bout to a third and deciding stanza. In the third, both fighters spent most of their time circling each other, and while Emerson appeared to score the most effective blows of the round with kicks to the leg, the decision went to the more aggressive Hill, who put Team Pulver back in the win column and in control heading into episode seven.
