Thiago Alves Says he Has What it Takes to Reach Contender Status Again

Thiago Alves feels he’s a threat to any welterweight as long as he’s active.

Alves is coming off a solid performance against Patrick Cote this past Saturday night (April 8). The “Pitbull” earned a unanimous decision victory over “The Predator” and improved his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) record to 22-11.

The official Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight rankings don’t feature Alves, but he feels that will change once he’s more active. Speaking with the media, Alves said he’s confident that he can climb the 170-pound ladder once again. He went in-depth into why he believes he’s still a threat (via MMAJunkie.com):

“I’ve been at the top of the weight class for years now. I got myself out of the rankings twice, once by inactivity – I’ve had four surgeries in two years – and the second by trying to drop to lightweight. I’m back. I know I belong to the top, so it’s just a matter of me getting active again. I’m active, and I think it will be nice to get a top 10 (fighter). I know if I’m healthy, I’m able to fight hard. I have the technique and the will and the power to compete at the top of this weight class. So I feel pretty good.”
