UFC 178 Adds Cerrone vs Green As Co-Main Event

The UFC has announced that a bout between surging lightweights Donald Cerrone and Bobby Green has been added to the UFC 178 lineup.

This new addition to the card comes on the heels of the postponement of the originally scheduled Light Heavyweight title main event of Jones vs Cormier. That bout was subsequently replaced with the new main event of Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson defending against Chris Cariaso. And the shuffling of the card continues with this bout.

Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone has already achieved 3 victories in the Octagon in 2014, and aims to make it 6 by years end. Cerrone has now won 4 straight bouts. He has finished each of his previous 4 opponents within the allotted 15 minutes, and earned a performance of the night in each of them.

Bobby ‘King’ Green has put together an impressive win streak since his addition to the UFC in early 2013. He is the winner of 4 straight fights inside the Octagon and is on an 8-fight winning streak overall. Green last competed on the UFC on FOX 12 card (July 26) where he bested Josh Thomson in a very close decision. Green was originally set to face Jorge Masvidal.

This fight may have title implications, as both are ranked in (or near) the top 10 lightweights in most ranking systems. However with the champion Anthony Pettis slotted to face Gilbert Melendez in December following a season of TUF, the winner of this bout will likely be put into a #1 contender fight next (possibly against the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov or the winner of Benson Henderson / Rafael dos Anjos).

Jorge Masvidal was orignally pegged to fight Bobby Green. He has now been tabbed to fight James Krause. Masvidal is on a 2 fight-win streak, and most recently beat Daron Cruickshank at UFC on FOX 12. Krause is 9-1 is in last 10 fights, with the lone loss coming to Bobby Green.

The UFC 178 card in Las Vegas on September 27th now features:

Demetrious Johnson vs. Chris Cariaso – FLW Title
Donald Cerrone vs. Bobby Green – LW

Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier – FW
Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero – MW
Dominic Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki – BW
Cat Zingano vs. Amanda Nunes – BW

Brian Ebersole vs. John Howard – WW
Patrick Cote vs. Stephen Thompson – WW
Kevin Lee vs. Jon Tuck – LW
