It looks like UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez will be on the shelf longer than originally expected.
Velasquez, who underwent surgery for a knee injury, was believed to be on the sidelines recovering until March, however fight fans may have to wait longer than that to see the number one Heavyweight on the planet.
Velasquez’s American Kickboxing Academy coach Javier Mendez spoke about the situation on Monday’s edition of “The MMA Hour” at MMAFighting.com.
“It turned out his MCL was worse,” said Mendez “They put two anchors on it, it turns out he’ll be out a little longer than anticipated.”
As things stand now, there is no official timetable for Velasquez’s Octagon return.
Mendez also detailed how the injury went from bad to worse, forcing Velasquez to pull out of his fight at UFC 180 with Fabricio Werdum.
“Originally, he had a slight tear in the meniscus, but he was fine,” Mendez said. “He was training. He was doing everything necessary for the fight. The fight was going to go on. Then he was working on sprawling drills and it was a little slippery. As he went to sprawl, he kind of went one way and his body went another way, and next thing I know I hear a yelp.”
With Velasquez on the sidelines, Mark Hunt now challenges Werdum for an interim UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 180 on November 15th in Mexico City.
