While many are pointing to a near two-year layoff and ridiculously high elevation in Mexico City for Cain Velasquez’s loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 188 on Saturday night, Velasquez is not one of them.
Velasquez spoke about what was the second loss of his pro MMA career to Werdum, claiming he has no excuses and that Werdum was simply the better fighter on the night.
“I was here two weeks before the fight, maybe that wasn’t enough,” said Velasquez. “Again, no excuses, Fabricio was the better guy tonight. He fought with great technique, very relaxed. So, he was just the better guy tonight.”
Velasquez continued, “We didn’t not want to go to the ground with him. We knew that if we fought everywhere, we would have to do that. We are not one-sided anymore. You go to the ground, and we fight there. I was ready to do that.”
While he won’t make excuses, he did explain how he got caught in the guillotine choke that ultimately ended his evening.
“Going into that double leg, he caught my neck,” said Velasquez. “I had my hand way on the outside. Again, that was my fault, so again, you live and you learn.”
