Cat Zingano On Loss To Ronda Rousey: I Expected To Fight, Not Have A Jiu-Jitsu Match

At UFC 184 back in February, top ranked contender Cat Zingano lost for the first time in her professional MMA career to current UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey via submission in 14 seconds. According to Zingano, however, she expected to fight Rousey, not have a jiu-jitsu match with her.

Zingano recently spoke with ESPN about her loss to Rousey, claiming she has no regrets about her decision to start off the fight by charging at Rousey with a flying knee, a decision that ultimately led to her tapping out just seconds later.

“I stand by my decision,” Zingano said about her fight strategy against Rousey at UFC 184. “Throughout the week, every time I saw Ronda we would shake hands and she would say, ‘Come on, let’s do this. Let’s put on an epic fight.’ I was thinking, ‘I don’t want to talk to her. I don’t want to be friends with her. At some point, I’m planning on being on top of this girl and I don’t want to care what I’m doing to her.'”

From there, Zingano seemed to get a bit annoyed, pointing out that after all of that, she was ready to have a barn burner of fight, only to find out that Rousey intended on having a “jiu-jitsu match.”
