UFC Interim Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor was on UFC Tonight earlier this evening for late UFC 194 hype, and he shared a number of thoughts on his big title unification fight with Jose Aldo. Perhaps the most newsworthy bit was about his plans for moving up in weight in the near future. In the past, he’s claimed he’ll move up to lightweight after beating Aldo, but that may change…sort of. On the show, this is what he said about the divisional landscape:
I will unify my world title and then I feel in a business sense, it makes sense to move up to take the 155 pound belt, sprinkle that McGregor magic on it and take that 155 pound belt. There are a lot of featherweight fights going on this weekend and I’ll wait for a contender to emerge. While I wait, I’ll move up and take the 155 pound belt, and when a featherweight competitor emerges, I’ll come back down and eliminate that, and then move back up again to eliminate the competitor in the 155-pound division.
McGregor also touched on his philosophy of not training for specific fighters. He told hosts Kenny Florian and Daniel Cormier that “If I trained like many trained when he pulled out the first time, I’d be left unprepared, so I focus on me, on what I need improvement on and what moves and shots and sequences that I do.”
McGregor is also predicting a first round knockout: “I’m not picking numbers from the sky, when I analyze his entries and exits, his approach, then my entries and exits, the shots that I need to land will land within the first four minutes of the fight.”
Aldo vs. McGregor headlines UFC 194 this Saturday night (December 12th) live on pay-per-view.
