While Conor McGregor was the one looking to add a second UFC belt to his collection this year, Frankie Edgar explained why he may soon be the man to hold belts in two weight classes.
Edgar is scheduled to fight Jose Aldo for an interim UFC Featherweight title in a rematch of a fight they had years ago for the undisputed title, which Aldo held at the time and retained via decision, at the upcoming landmark UFC 200 event in July.
As “The Answer” explained during the recent UFC 200 ticket on-sale press conference in New York, the fight between he and Aldo may end up being for the real UFC Featherweight Title after all.
A former Lightweight champion of the UFC, Edgar also spoke about the possibility of dropping down to Bantamweight after he wraps up business in the UFC’s 145-pound division.
“I don’t want to get ahead of myself. It seems whatever weight class I go to, people are telling me to go to a lower one. I want to make sure I get this 145-pound belt back first. Then we’ll see. It’s going to be tough to pass that up to be a possible three-division champion. Interim title isn’t the same thing, and we want that real title. If Conor ever does come back to featherweight, I’m ready. I’m going to be ready, and it’s going to be different this time, and I’m walking home with the belt. It’s the No. 1 contender belt; it’s what you call it really. But I do have a feeling Conor may never come back to 145, so in time, this belt will be the real belt. Being a two-division champion is something I’ve been trying to do for a while since I first fought Aldo. (On) July 9, there’s going to be a two-division champion, and his name isn’t going to be Conor McGregor, either.”
UFC 200: Cormier vs. Jones II is scheduled for Saturday, July 9, 2016 at the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
