Last week, rumors circulated online claiming that UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta and company President Dana White met with former Welterweight king Georges St-Pierre in Montreal about a potential comeback to the top MMA organization on planet Earth.
According to GSP, however, that is not the case.
According to a report by respected veteran MMA journalist Ariel Helwani on the FOX Sports 1 program “UFC Tonight,” the former UFC Welterweight Champion claims the UFC executives were not trying to convince him to return to his fighting ways inside the infamous Octagon.
When describing his meeting with Fertitta and White at the classy “Toque” restaurant in downtown Montreal, St-Pierre claimed it was, “great” and “a lot of fun.” The one-time pay-per-view king of the sport of MMA added, “we laughed a lot,” when describing the atmosphere at the dinner table that the power trio shared.
After edging out current UFC Welterweight Champion Johny Hendricks by way of controversial judges decision at UFC 167, St-Pierre suffered a torn ACL, an injury that resulted in the former MMA champ undergoing another knee operation.
This was not unfamiliar territory for the Quebec native, as he suffered — and returned from — a similar injury in early 2012 when preparing for his grudge match with UFC bad boy Nick Diaz. The MMA veteran who fights under the nickname “Rush,” was able to rush his way through surgery and rehab, leading to an Octagon return in November of 2012, where he defeated Carlos Condit to once again prove that he was the undisputed 170-pound champion.
Now that he finds himself back on the road to recovery from ACL surgery, GSP described his first few days back at the Tristar Gym in Montreal as “humiliating,” but noted that it’s “better than before he came back for Condit,” referencing the aforementioned 2012 Octagon return from his last ACL ordeal.
St-Pierre last fought for the UFC in November of 2013, defeating Johny Hendricks by way of controversial split decision, and while he claims the UFC brass didn’t meet with him in an attempt to lure him back into the Octagon, his own coaching staff has openly predicted that we have yet to see the last of the Canadian hero inside the MMA cage.
