Alcides Nunes, UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo’s Team Nova Uniao teammate, has not had what one would call a good week.
Nunes, who has worked with Aldo for several for his UFC title fights, was the training partner that was working out with the UFC 145-pound champion earlier this week when an accident occurred that resulted in Aldo suffering what is believed to be fractured ribs.
According to those close to the situation, Nunes, a 5-0 lightweight fighter from Team Nova Uniao, hit Aldo with a spinning back-kick, a blow that resulted in Aldo suffering the unfortunate injury.
“I threw a kick but slipped with all the sweat on the mat, and ended up hitting his rib,” Nunes told MMAFighting.com. “I was mimicking McGregor’s unorthodox style, things he does in the fight. I’m also left-handed, my style is similar to his, so that’s why they asked me to be part of his camp, but I ended up slipping and causing this injury.”
Nunes noted that despite suffering the blow, Aldo continued to train until eventually he was forced to stop and was rushed to the hospital for examination.
“He finished the round, and then decided to stop,” said Nunes. “I’m sure he would continue to train if he could. He’s a warrior and was really well prepared for this fight.”
“I’m still sad about all this,” he said. “As a fan and an athlete, I know this is devastating. I’m really sad. Aldo was in shape and prepared for this fight.”
Team Nova Uniao head coach Andre Pederneiras is expected to meet with Aldo’s doctors on Wednesday to find out the status of his fighter for the highly anticipated UFC Featherweight Championship showdown against Conor McGregor at UFC 189, the pay-per-view event scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
