Former UFC Heavyweight Junior dos Santos is still looking forward to a “beautiful” fight against Stipe Miocic after their scheduled bout in May was postponed due to to ‘Cigano’ breaking his hand. During an interview with MMAFighting.com, he said:
“Miocic is doing a good job, coming off great wins. I was focused on fighting him before, trained for him, so I think it would be a good fight for me. It would be a beautiful fight for the fans as well.”
dos Santos hasn’t fought since last October, when he unsuccessfully attempted to recapture the Heavyweight championship from Cain Velasquez.
Miocic (13-1) has won three consecutive fights and currently ranks #5 on UFC’s Heavyweight rankings, three spots below dos Santos.
Several other heavyweights, including Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett, have also recently expressed an interest in fighting him. However, dos Santos thinks Overeem in particular is just using his name as a potential opponent to promote himself.
“They are challenging me to promote themselves. I had two dates to fight Overeem. First, he was caught in a drug test and then got hurt. I think that he’s saying this to give an answer to his fans. There is no sense of him talking about this now, he also has an opponent to face.”
dos Santos says he’s currently recovering from a knee injury but is hopeful to be back in the Octagon by November.
“It was a small injury. When I had to stop training because of my broken hand, I felt a pain in my knee. I did all the exams and it showed nothing. (The doctor) cleared me to slowly return to training now to see how I’m going to feel. I will schedule my next fight when I feel 100-percent ready.”
