On Saturday, UFC announced the new main event of UFC 206. Something tells me Conor McGregor fans might be interested in this story.
UFC announced this weekend that the scheduled main event between Daniel Cormier and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson has been cancelled after Cormier pulled off the 12/10 fight card with an injury. It is rumored that “Rumble” vs. Gegard Mousasi was attempted to be put together as the new main event of the show, however Rumble reportedly opted to wait on Cormier and a guaranteed title shot instead.
With D.C. and “Rumble” both off of the card, a new main event was set between Anthony “Showtime” Pettis and Max Holloway. The two will determine the new interim UFC Featherweight Champion, as Jose Aldo has reportedly moved up to full-champion-status. The Pettis-Holloway fight in theory will determine the two fighters who will compete for what is essentially the vacant 145-pound title.
Of course, that is only if we’re being technical.
So, what happened to Conor McGregor’s status as both the UFC Lightweight and Featherweight Champion? Well, apparently he decided to play ball, or UFC played ball for him. Either way, “The Notorious” has apparently relinquished the gold he originally won from the aforementioned Aldo.
From UFC.com:
The UFC announced on Saturday that world lightweight champion Conor McGregor has vacated his featherweight title and opted to keep the 155-pound title he won by defeating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 on Nov. 12.
Interim featherweight titleholder Jose Aldo has now been elevated to undisputed champion, and following these developments, the interim UFC featherweight title will be on the line on Saturday, Dec. 10, as Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis battle for championship gold in the new main event of UFC 206.
The winner of the five-round bout, which will be held at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, will face Aldo in 2017 for the unified belt.
This bout replaces the UFC light heavyweight championship bout between Daniel Cormier and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, which was scrapped when Cormier was forced to withdraw from the rematch on Friday due to injury.
