Mike Goldberg Talks Brock Lesnar Returning To UFC, WWE vs. UFC Competition & More

UFC play-by-play announcer Mike Goldberg appeared on “The Paul Allen Project” radio show on Thursday and discussed a number of topics, including his upcoming NFL commentary for two Minnesota Vikings games, as well as Brock Lesnar’s run in the UFC and rumors that he may be returning to the promotion in the future.

Goldberg mentioned that he heard rumors that the current WWE World Heavyweight Champion is returning to fight in the Octagon again, however he noted that he has heard these same rumors for two or three years now, so he’s not quite sure how legitimate they are.

When the topic of Lesnar’s original run in the UFC came up, Goldberg admitted that he feels he didn’t take the sport of MMA as seriously as he should have.

“To me, Brock never embraced the true game of mixed martial arts,” Goldberg said. “He’s an alpha male, takes you down and beats you up. He didn’t embrace the striking, he didn’t embrace the submission game. He was like, ‘This is what I do, I’m good at it, and I’ll win by doing it.'”

Goldberg said he hopes that Lesnar would be more well-rounded if he were ever to return to the UFC.

He also spoke about the fact that Lesnar drew the UFC’s biggest numbers on pay-per-view, more so than any other fighter in the history of the company.

Goldberg talked briefly about UFC vs. WWE competition, noting that he feels they are two separate worlds. He said he doesn’t view WWE as competition, outside of the fact that the two may compete at times for advertising dollars. He said WWE doesn’t run as many pay-per-views as the UFC and that WWE runs on television on Monday’s and Thursday’s (although it’s actually Monday’s and Friday’s), whereas UFC primarily runs on TV on Saturday’s.

Towards the end of the interview, Goldberg also spoke about the fact that at one point, WWE tried to lure him away from the UFC to accept a position as the lead announcer for their flagship program, WWE RAW.
