UFC 176 Cancelled, Aldo vs. Mendes Later This Year

UFC 176 Cancelled

UFC has announced the August 2nd UFC 176 pay-per-view from Los Angeles, California has been cancelled. All of the previously scheduled fights, including the Aldo vs. Mendes II main event, will take place later this year on various other shows. Fans who purchased tickets for UFC 176 from the STAPLES Center will will be offered at the original point of purchase, according to a statement by UFC.

The news comes days after UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo suffered a shoulder injury that prevented him from fighting Chad Mendes in the main event. He’ll be kept out of training for 3-4 weeks.  There’s been talk that the fight could be added to the October pay-per-view.

UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta tells Yahoo! Sports:

“At the end of the day, this doesn’t happen very often, but in pay-per-views, we want to maintain where we have a title on the line. Unless it’s a special event, like an Anderson Silva or something like that, we want [to have a title fight headline] a pay-per-view, so we’ve decided to go ahead and postpone the event.”

Aside from the Aldo vs. Mendes II min event, other fights scheduled for the show included:

  • Gegard Mousasi vs. Ronaldo Souza
  • Fabricio Camoes vs. Gray Maynard
  • Shayna Baszler vs. Bethe Correia
  • Jussier Formiga vs. Zach Makovsky
  • Walmir Lazaro vs. James Vick
  • Derek Brunson vs. Lorenz Larkin
  • Bobby Green vs. Abel Trujillo
  • Danny Castillo vs. Tony Ferguson
  • Beneil Dariush vs. Tony Martin
  • Matt Dwyer vs. Alex Garcia

UFC’s next pay-per-view offering takes place on Saturday, August 30th from the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, California. The show will remain “UFC 177” and will headlined by UFC Bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao in a rematch from their fight at UFC 173 back in May.

Tickets for UFC 177 go on sale next Friday, July 18th.
