The talk of a potential Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight continues to gain attention from both the MMA and boxing communities. This weekend, legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach joined the growing list of legitimate personalities who claim to have heard that the fight is actually going to happen.
Roach said that he has not been asked to train McGregor for a boxing match against Mayweather as has been rumored in certain places, however he did say that Mayweather spoke with him about the potential fight recently and told him if he is offered the job he should take it.
“Well there’s a lot of rumors out there that I’m getting calls from Conor [McGregor] asking me to train him, but they’re not true. They have not called me yet,” said Roach on the latest edition of “Inside MMA” on AXS TV (see above). “Mayweather did come by my gym last week and he asked me to take that job if it’s offered to me because he told me the fight is going to happen and we’re going to make a lot of money.”
If Roach would take the gig, however, he admits that it would be years before someone like McGregor would have any shot against Mayweather in a straight boxing contest.
“It would take me three years at least to get him ready to fight,” said Roach. “I don’t think it’s really possible for a MMA fighter to fight a boxer. I don’t think it’s really fair. Mayweather would out box him all day long. I mean Conor McGregor seems like a tough guy and all that, but being a tough guy doesn’t really help you in boxing.”
“Mayweather is the best boxer in the world and he would not even lose a round against a guy with Conor’s experience,” Roach added. “He looks like an okay boxer, he’s a very good MMA fighter, but this is boxing. He’s kind of a beginner at boxing.”
