UFC Heavyweight contender Josh Barnett has long considered himself a professional wrestler, and while he has had a lengthy history as a pro wrestler in Japan, one wonders why he hasn’t broken through to the WWE level in North America. Well, Barnett has a very good explanation for that — he’s too good.
Barnett, who has worked for New Japan Pro Wrestling several times in the past, and has been handling the commentary for their AXS TV shows since January, recently spoke with WrestlingINC.com and explained why he has never worked for WWE.
“I think the biggest thing is, they don’t want someone to come in and upend their show,” said Barnett. “Working is working, and there’s a lot of great guys in WWE that I’d love to put on a match with.”
Barnett continued, “The thing is, wherever I go, I’m a wrestler. I’m not an entertainer or superstar or whatever. I’m a wrestler first, and I won’t concede on that.”
The wrestler will return to the Octagon for a fight against fellow MMA veteran Roy “Big Country” Nelson at UFC Fight Night 75, which takes place on September 27th in Saitama, Japan.
