“I wanted to make sure when we went to New York, we delivered.”
According to public opinion, they absolutely did.
Those were the words of UFC President Dana White, who appeared live on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) during game three of the MLB World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians on Friday.
White announced during his appearance on the game (see above) that the UFC has already broken the previous gate record at Madison Square Garden for their upcoming New York debut show, featuring a stacked fight card headlined by three UFC World Championship fights.
“It’s the biggest, baddest card we’ve ever done in the history of the company,” White said of the show featuring Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor in the main event slot, with Alvarez’s 155-pound title on the line.
The previous MSG gate record for a combat sports event was the Lennox Lewis vs. Evander Holyfield boxing match in 1999, which drew 21,284 paid for a $13.5 million gate. When UFC introduces the big leagues of professional MMA to the Empire State next month, the new record will be UFC 205: Alvarez vs. McGregor, according to the UFC boss man.
